Last night saw several Wash men strong and true, some old, and some new, head down to Martha's Bar at The Wash Pub for the first official event of the season - AGM 2023. We managed to whip through proceedings fairly quickly and there was lots to tell and good discussions had. Here below is a brief summary.
Please congratulate the The Wash CC Committee 2023 Edition:
Stu Marsh - Chairman
Nick Kripps - Treasurer
Max Murrain - Captain
Mark Molloy - Vice Captain
Matt Cragoe - Fixtures Secretary
Rory Vokes-Dudgeon - Club Secretary
Brian Wingfield - Social Secretary
Mike Egan - Tour Manager
Thanks Brian for your many years as Club Secretary and welcome to the role of Social Secretary. And it's great to see Rory VD step up to the committee.
The full seasons fixtures have been published on the Play-Cricket site. Please go there and check it out. Match Managers have been assigned and yours truly will be covering April so keep an eye on your inboxes as our first game is next Sunday 23rd April.
But just prior to that, we're having a Season Opening Social Night at The Wash on 22nd April, commencing at about 6pm. Why not get the season off to an intoxicated start?! We've booked an area for all to come along and calm the first game nerves with a few quiet ales. Please bring "volumes of desire" (I think you had to be there to understand).
For the first time in 10 years, the cost of the Washington CC Annual Subscription fee has been raised. This will now cost you the princely sum of £50, and for those players who need one, that will include a free Wash playing shirt. And just like always, once you've played 5 games in a season, you will get yourself a nice numbered Wash cap.
And while we're on the subject of merchandise, if you would like to buy some really cool Washington CC 50th Anniversary Branded kit... click on the Wash Shop link at the top of this page. The logo has been specially prepared for this year only, so get your Wash branded gear and look like a bloody legend!!
BIG NEWS - When at the Wash Pub... tell them you're with the Washington Cricket Club and you're entitled to a 10% discount on drinks! How good is that?!
Along with that little bonus, our heartfelt thanks go out to Antonia at the Wash, who has paid for our balls this season, and will be stumping up some more cash in this special 50th year to help cover the cost of the - SOLD OUT - Anniversary Dinner. Thanks a lot for all the support.
So - lots happening. Keep an eye out for more notifications from Tour Sec Megan and Social Sec Brian as we head into serious part of the year...
Get ready to Smash 50th Anniversary Leather!!
Washington CC Chairman
It's April 2023... The Last of Us (Season 1) is over and Easter (both of these give me shivers) is just around the corner and that can mean only one thing... The Washington CC 50th Season is about to get under way.
So - here's a couple of dates to get in your calendars.
Friday 14th April - Washington CC 2023 AGM
This will be held down in Martha's Bar at The Wash. We have a few important points to get through (elections of committee, fixtures list unveiling, big 50th dinner discussion, major socials, match managers for each month, etc. etc.) and it usually takes an hour or so, after which we head upstairs and continue general pre-season cricket chat. All players and partners and new recruits are most welcome.
For those that haven't been along to an AGM before, this is a great opportunity to come along to see some relatively official Wash business and so we'd love to see you there to get involved.
Let us know if you're up for it by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Saturday 22nd April - Season 50 Opener Sesh!!
Our first game will be on Sunday 23rd at Battersea Park... and so we might as well turn up with sore heads right! Come along for a few beers.... we'll be upstairs at The Washington Pub. Again - all welcome!!
Washington CC Committee
The Washington 2022 End of Season dinner, belatedly held in Martha's Bar at the Wash on 11th February, was a very happy affair. And, we are delighted to report that long time club stalwart (having played since way back when he was just a wee lad and didn't need to shave) and skipper Max Murrain, has now had his name forever etched onto the Washington CC Clubman Trophy. After taking the lions share of the votes from his team mates, and beating off one close challenger for the title, Max has been duly crowned the Washington CC Clubman 2022. He drank from the cup as is the custom and even wore a fancy suit for the occasion or maybe it was for a wedding he was attending afterwards. Anyway, it doesn't matter, cos he won so well done and Congratulations to Maxxy. He also picked up the Bowlers Award, having amassed 33 wickets in the season, so stellar outing for the young man.
Rory Vokes-Dudgeon took home the Batsmen Award in his debutant year (a class effort with the bat RVD so well done and long may that sort of behaviour continue), while Shyam Pushpanath our extraordinary slipper, added the Fielder of the Year award to his already no doubt impressive collection of cricketing trophies. The Silly Point Award was given to two gents, Mr Keith Williams and Mr Sam Collins for what must be said was an extraordinarily close call in the field, during our fixture against The Hollybush on 29th May 2022. It left one of those lads in much pain and I'm sure they will be better fielders for the experience. A little less "village" in 2023 please fellas. Just displaced clubman Mark "trois stumpings" Molloy was endowed with the Captains Award and newcomer Justin Wolfington topped it all off with the Most-Improved Player of 2022.
Congratulations to all! Well deserved.
We all had a lovely late lunch washed down with cold beer and wine and several of the stayers amongst us returned to the main bar to finish off the evening in some style.
Next event will be the AGM on 14th April, also at The Wash pub. Pencil that in your diaries.
Well... first blog post in a while...
After a mixed start to the season, the middle section and peak summer months are bearing out to be just about perfect for The Wash. We're handling the hot conditions brilliantly and with major contributions from experienced Washmen and many newer members - fantastic to see so many new faces filling the ranks - the results are coming and there are many smiling faces and good energy around the club.
We've also had some great crowds and good support at several games, and so if you can't play but you can get out and watch for a bit please do. It's fantastic to see supporters cheering the Wash on.
And here's a very important note... you will all likely know that after our upcoming tour to Malta in October (can't wait for that), 2023 is just around the corner. This will be a significant year in Wash history! YES - it will be THE BIG 5 & 0 for The Washington CC. Lots of notifications coming out real soon through email and WhatsApp so stay tuned an we look forward to seeing lots of faithful Wash enthusiasts in 2023 to celebrate this important milestone in the life of the Washington Cricket Club.
And here's a few photos to dwell on! Ain't cricket great!
G'day Good Wash People,
Last night we held our first in-person AGM since 2019. We kicked off at around 7pm down in Martha's Bar, and it was bloody fantastic to see such a great turn out, with a good mix of old and new faces! And with a delicious array of food put on by Antonia (Thanks again for this!!) and several beverages going down nicely, we whistled through the agenda at a nice pace, leaving plenty of quality time for a Friday Sesh in the main bar.
The prime event of the evening was the election of the committee. We are pleased to announce that...
Captain - Max Murrain (formerly VC)
Vice Captain - Mark Molloy (formerly Social Sec)
Tour Manager - Mike Egan
Social Secretary - Charles Hatton
have all been newly elected. Congratulations all!
Returning for another year unchanged are:
Secretary - Brian Wingfield
Treasurer - Nick Kripps
Fixtures Secretary - Matt Cragoe
Chairman - Stuart Marsh
We also announced our Tour Destination for the end of 2022, which will be Malta over the weekend of 01/02 October. You will all recall that we had to cancel the tour to this same destination last year due to a lack of numbers, and others will remember how excellent this destination is for late summer cricket. With good interest so far, we look well on the way to getting a solid group of players so please get your names down for that and remember we really do encourage wives, GF's and partners to come along. Looking forward to that already, and for those that haven't been, check it out: https://www.marsasportsclub.com/en/cricket
Matt Cragoe delivered a fine oratory on the fixtures list (check WhatsApp for that) and I won't go into every detail that we discussed, but suffice to say Washington CC 50th Anniversary (2023) year, tour and special events promoted a lively chat, so the new committee certainly has a job on it's hands to make sure we get prepped for that.
So, with lots of new and old faces around, there really is an air of positivity for the present and future of The Washington CC. So, here's to Smashing 2022 Leather on the park very soon.
